Heads up: buy through a link here and we earn a commission from Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — how that works.
The short answer
hykolity's 3-CCT 4 ft fixture is the best buy for most garages: 5,500 lumens at 42W — 130 lumens per watt, the best efficiency-per-dollar here — with selectable 4000K, 5000K or 6500K and three output levels from one product. For a 400 sq ft two-car garage you want roughly four of them, which lands you at the 50-75 lumens per square foot a working garage needs.
The best-specified 4 ft shop light here: 130 lm/W, three color temperatures and three output levels from one fixture. No published CRI, like everything else in the category.
The brightest 4 ft fixture in the group with a proper aluminum housing. The implied efficacy is high enough that it is worth treating as a claim rather than a measurement.

Start with the arithmetic
Lighting is the one category on this site you can decide with a single calculation, because lumens and watts are published on essentially every listing.
Floor area × 60 lumens per square foot ÷ fixture output = number of fixtures.

People consistently under-buy here. A single 4,400 lm fixture in the center of a two-car garage is roughly a tenth of what the room needs, and it is what most garages actually have. Layout detail is on the garage lighting layout guide.
Efficacy: a 60% spread on products that look identical
Lumens per watt determines your running cost for the fixture's life, and in this category it ranges from about 105 to about 167 — a 60% spread between products on the same shelf at similar prices.
Efficacy calculated from each maker's published lumen and wattage figures. Barrina is the only one that publishes a MINIMUM rather than a maximum.

A figure near 167 lm/W would be class-leading for any LED fixture. Treat the top of this table as the maker's claim rather than a measurement. Barrina publishing a MINIMUM efficacy of 138 lm/W is a meaningfully more conservative way to state the same spec, and worth weighting accordingly.
The CRI gap, stated plainly
Color rendering index describes how accurately a light shows color. No fixture in this entire category publishes one. Not one.
For general garage work that does not matter much — you can see what you are doing, and a tool is a tool whatever shade it looks. For paint matching, detailing, bodywork or anything where you need to judge color accurately, it matters a great deal.
The honest position is that this product set does not let you choose on CRI, and we are not going to publish a number we cannot source. What you can do about it is on the best lighting for car detailing.
Color temperature: 5000K, with one exception
5000K reads as clean neutral daylight and it is what almost every fixture here is tuned to. It is the right default.
4000K is warmer and easier to spend three hours under. 6500K is noticeably blue — BBOUNDER and Barrina's T5 are 6500K and SHOPLED is 6000K, and many people find that clinical in a space they work in for a whole afternoon.
The elegant answer is hykolity's 3-CCT fixture, which switches between 4000K, 5000K and 6500K on the fixture. One product, decide later, and set a warmer tone over the bench than over the bay if you want. More on color temperature and CRI.
Linking: check the wattage, not just the limit
Linkable fixtures daisy-chain so one plug feeds several lights, which is what makes a garage lighting install trivial — no wiring, no electrician, one outlet.

The mistake is ignoring the right-hand column. Six 42W fixtures on one plug is 252W — comfortable. Three 100W 8-footers is 300W on one cord, which is where you check the cord rating and consider splitting across circuits. The link limit exists for a reason; do not exceed it because the connector physically fits.
Three fixture types, three jobs
4 ft linear — the default for a normal garage. Spreads light along the space, cheapest lumens, easiest to mount and link. Start here.
8 ft linear — half the mounting points and cords for the same light. Right for a big garage you are doing in one go with help.
UFO high bay — a lot of light from one point, designed for 12 ft+. In a 9 ft garage one is both blinding beneath it and leaves the corners dark.
And separately, a portable work light, which is not room lighting at all — it goes inside an engine bay or under a car where no fixture reaches. See the best garage work lights.

Where it wins
+130 lm/W is the highest published efficacy in this group — that is real money off the electricity bill over a decade
+Selectable CCT lets you set 4000K over a bench and 5000K over the bay, from one product
+Three wattage levels means one fixture type works in a tall garage and a low one
+Switch is on the fixture, so no wall switch to wire
Where it doesn’t
−No CRI published, so color-critical work (paint matching, detailing) is a judgment call
−Selectable CCT means a toggle switch someone will knock to the wrong setting
−Linking six units at 42W is 252W on one plug — fine, but check the cord rating

Where it wins
+The cheapest single 4 ft fixture here, so you can light a bay in stages
+Open frame means no yellowing diffuser and no heat trapped against the LEDs — the most common cause of early failure
+ETL certified rather than uncertified
+One pound: it hangs on two chains and never sags
Where it doesn’t
−105 lm/W where the 3-CCT model manages 130 lm/W for a few dollars more
−Fixed 5000K: no option for a warmer bench light
−Open frame collects dust directly on the LEDs, which needs an occasional blow-out
Add task light over the bench
Room light and task light are different problems. More ceiling light does not fix the shadow your own head and hands cast on the work in front of you — only light from a different angle, close to the work, does.
Two answers. A slim Barrina T5 strip under a shelf directly above the bench, which links up to eight and costs very little. Or a bench with an integrated magnetic LED strip — Eltean, Rumetol, HAK and CAMMOO all ship one, and the magnetic mount lets you move it to kill the shadow. See the best garage workbenches.
Because lighting is cheap and transformative, it is also the first thing bought in garage setup under $500.
Questions people actually ask
How many lumens do I need in a garage?+
50-75 lumens per square foot for a working garage, so a 400 sq ft two-car bay wants roughly 20,000-30,000 lumens total. Four 4 ft fixtures at 5,500-7,500 lm each gets there, or two 8 ft fixtures at 15,000 lm. Most garages have about a tenth of that.
What is the best color temperature for a garage?+
5000K — clean neutral daylight, and what almost every fixture here is tuned to. 4000K is warmer and easier over a long session; 6500K is noticeably blue and many people find it clinical. hykolity's 3-CCT fixture lets you choose between all three from one product.
What CRI do these lights have?+
None of them publish one. Not a single fixture in this category states a color rendering index, which is a finding rather than an omission on our part. For color-critical work — paint matching, detailing — that matters, and we will not invent a number to fill the gap. See color temperature and CRI.
4 ft or 8 ft fixtures?+
Eight-foot halves your mounting points and cords for the same light, which is the real argument. Against that, an 8 ft fixture is awkward to carry, awkward to mount alone and more likely to arrive damaged. See 4 ft vs 8 ft shop lights.
How many can I link on one plug?+
It varies and it is published: Barrina T5 links 8, hykolity 6, BBOUNDER and Sunco 4, ELEKICO 3, and SHOPLED states no more than 3 at once. Multiply fixtures by watts to check the total — six 42W fixtures is 252W, which is fine; four 100W 8-footers is 400W on one cord, which needs thought.
Do I need high bay lights?+
Only if the ceiling is high. A UFO high bay concentrates light into a cone, which is right at 12-14 ft and overwhelming at 9 ft. In a standard garage, linear fixtures spread light more evenly for less money. See lighting for high garage ceilings.
