Heads up: buy through a link here and we earn a commission from Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — how that works.
The short answer
For most garages the right bench is 48 inches wide, 24 inches deep, with a solid rubberwood top and tool-free height adjustment — that combination costs the least and fits the most situations. Choose a steel-top cabinet bench instead if the work is mechanical and you want a lock; choose a folding bench if the garage still parks a car.
The wood-top pick: a solid rubberwood surface you can genuinely work on, at a height that adjusts across 10 inches, with published ratings for both the top and the shelf.
Buy this one for the lock. A pry-resistant cabinet plus a published 1.2 mm frame thickness is a more useful pair of facts than another four-figure capacity claim.
The most flexible bench of the group: the broadest height range, casters in the box, and a USB-C port — on an engineered-wood top rather than solid hardwood.
The most adjustable bench here: ten height steps and a shelf that moves with your stuff, for people who would rather have flexibility than a locking cabinet.
The honest entry point: WEN publishes a 220 lb surface rating where competitors advertise 2,500 lb 'total capacity', and the outlets and light mean you are working the same afternoon.
The bench to buy when the budget is tight and the garage is small: a real wood top and tool-free height adjustment, with no storage and no pretence of any.

The capacity number is not what you think
Scroll this category and you will see benches advertised at 220 lb and benches advertised at 2,500 lb, sitting side by side at similar prices. They are not eleven times apart in strength. They are answering different questions.
WEN rates the WB4723T's work surface at 220 lb — the thing you put weight on. Eltean, HAK and Rumetol quote a total static capacity for the whole frame, which includes the cabinet, the shelf and the legs sharing the load. Both figures are honest; only one of them tells you what the top will take.
What this means in practice: WEN's 220 lb bench is a hand-tool and assembly bench, and it says so. The 2,500 lb benches will take a great deal of weight spread across them and are still not somewhere to set down an engine block on one corner. If you need a genuine point-load capacity, nobody in this category publishes one, and you should treat every figure here as an evenly distributed ceiling.
Depth is the spec that will annoy you
Width is what you measure against the wall. Depth is what you notice every single time you use the bench.

Twenty-four inches is the number to aim for. Below it, you will be working with something hanging off the back edge most of the time. Above it, you are paying floor space for capability you may genuinely want — and only one bench here offers it.
Top material: three real choices
Solid rubberwood — the default
CAMMOO, MUWOOD and TORACK all use solid rubberwood (hevea), and for a garage it is the right compromise. You can clamp to it, drill into it, screw a jig to it, and sand it flat again when it gets chewed up. It stains where you spill and it wants an occasional oiling. MUWOOD is the only one here that publishes a thickness: 1.2 in.
Steel — for mechanical work
Eltean, Rumetol and HAK use all-steel tops, and WEN uses enamel-coated steel. Solvent, brake fluid, heat and impact do not care. Nothing clamps to it without a block, it rings loudly, and it will mark aluminum. Every steel-top bench here ships a rubber mat, which tells you the makers know.
Engineered wood — looks the same, is not
Northsky's 1 in. engineered-wood top is a genuinely good bench surface until it is damaged, and then it stays damaged, because you cannot plane engineered wood flat. If you expect to resurface the bench in five years, buy solid wood. The full comparison is on workbench top materials.
Height adjustment is worth more than it looks
A fixed-height bench is set for whatever the designer assumed. An adjustable bench is set for you and for the job in front of you, and the difference compounds over a long afternoon.
The ranges here: Northsky spans 27.9 to 43.4 in. — the widest, covering seated detail work through tall standing assembly. CAMMOO's 48 x 24 gives ten steps of 1.34 in. each, which is the finest adjustment and lets you actually dial in a comfortable elbow height. MUWOOD and the CAMMOO WHD60 both do six steps across roughly 28-40 in.
The fixed-height steel cabinet benches sit at a 37.5 in. working height with a 65 in. overall height including the pegboard. That is a good standing height and it is not negotiable. What height you should actually be aiming for is worked out on garage workbench height.
Storage: the counter-intuitive bit
The benches with the most storage are in the middle of the price range, not at the top. HAK's 48-inch bench has a pry-resistant locking cabinet, two drawers, three sides of pegboard and a top extension shelf. Eltean's has a keyed cabinet, two drawers and a no-drill pegboard. Both are mid-priced.
Meanwhile CAMMOO's WBC48-S — a solid wood top with tool-free height adjustment and an ETL power strip — has no storage at all. No drawers, no cabinet, not even a shelf. That is not a flaw; it is a different product. It is also why pairing a cheap bench with real tool storage and wall organization often beats buying one bench that tries to do everything.
Which one, for which garage
Maximum capacity, locked storage, permanent wall — the Eltean 48 in. steel bench. Highest published rating here, keyed cabinet, no-drill pegboard, magnetic LED strip.
A top you want to work on — the CAMMOO WHD60. Solid rubberwood, 2,000 lb top and 500 lb shelf both published, 10 inches of height adjustment.
Security matters most — the HAK 48 in. Pry-resistant cabinet lock and a published 1.2 mm frame thickness, which almost nothing at this price states.
Flexibility above all — the Northsky M2-9001. The widest height range, casters in the box, and a USB-C port.
Long stock — the CAMMOO WBW70. Seventy inches of clampable rubberwood, casters and leveling feet both included.
Tightest budget — the CAMMOO WBC48-S. A real wood top and tool-free adjustment, with no storage and no pretence of any.

Where it wins
+A real solid-rubberwood top: you can clamp to it, drill into it, plane on it and sand it flat again
+Height adjusts across a 10 in. range, which covers both standing assembly and seated detail work
+Published shelf rating (500 lb) as well as a top rating — rare and useful
+Leveling glides are specified with actual travel, which matters on a sloped garage slab
Where it doesn’t
−22 in. deep is shallow for engine or cabinet work; measure before you commit
−Wood tops need an occasional oiling and they will stain where you spill
−The adjustment knobs are manual — fine, but not a thing you will re-set mid-project

Where it wins
+Publishes an actual frame thickness (1.2 mm) and a bracing description, which almost nothing at this price does
+Pry-resistant cabinet lock, not just a keyed latch
+Three-sided pegboard turns the bench itself into the wall storage
+The 6 in. top shelf is where the lubricants and the tape measure live instead of under your work
Where it doesn’t
−All-steel top rings and dents; it is not the surface for finish woodwork
−65 in. tall with the pegboard, so it needs clear wall above the bench
−Sold under a brand with no published warranty terms we could find

+Outlets and task light are built in, so the bench is usable the day it is assembled
+Enamel-coated steel top shrugs off solvent and does not mark the work
+The lightest full-size bench here, which matters if you will move it
Where it doesn’t
−220 lb is a genuine ceiling: this is a hand-tool and assembly bench, not somewhere to drop an engine block
−The listed light is fluorescent, not LED — fine, but it is a tube you will eventually replace
−No frame gauge published, so you cannot compare its steel to the heavier benches on paper

Where it wins
+Solid wood top and tool-free height adjustment at the lowest price in this group
+41 lb means one person can carry it into position, which no steel-cabinet bench allows
+Independently adjustable feet level it properly on a slab that slopes to the door
+Master switch on the power strip is a small thing you will use every day
Where it doesn’t
−No storage at all beyond the top — no drawers, no cabinet, no shelf
−The low weight that makes it portable also means it walks under hard hand-planing
−The listing quotes both '6 position' and 'nine height settings'; the spec is internally inconsistent
Which bench should I buy if I only read one line?+
The Eltean 48-inch steel bench if you want maximum published capacity and a lockable cabinet, or the CAMMOO WHD60 if you want a solid rubberwood top you can clamp and drill. Those two cover most garages between them.
Is a 2,500 lb capacity claim believable?+
As a static, evenly distributed, whole-frame figure, it is plausible. As the amount you can drop on one corner, no. The published figure and the useful figure are different numbers, and no maker in this category publishes the second one. Load the middle, not the ends.
Do I need the integrated power strip?+
It is the feature you will use most and notice least. Every bench here except the portables has one, and the better ones publish the outlet count and whether the strip is ETL-certified. Four AC outlets plus USB is the current standard; a USB-C port (Northsky) is the useful addition.
How much assembly is involved?+
Two to three hours for the steel cabinet benches, and several explicitly state a two-person job. The adjustable wood-top benches are faster — CAMMOO's 48-inch can be built by one person, and the maker says so. Nothing here arrives assembled.
Should I bolt the bench to the wall?+
Any bench over about 60 inches tall with a loaded pegboard back is worth anchoring, for the same reason as tall shelving: the failure is tipping, not collapsing. None of these ship with an anchor kit, so budget for a pair of angle brackets and two lag screws into studs.
