What Height Should a Garage Workbench Be?

There is a right answer and it depends on your height and your work. Here is the arithmetic, and the benches that adjust so you do not have to guess.

The short answer

WorkHeightWhy
General garage and repair work34-38 in. (floor to your wrist crease, standing relaxed)Puts the work at knuckle height so you can use your body weight
Hand-planing and heavy woodworking2-3 in. BELOW your wrist height, so roughly 31-35 in.Lets you push from your shoulders and hips instead of your arms
Detailed and standing precision workAbout 4 in. ABOVE your wrist height, so roughly 38-42 in.Brings the work closer to your eyes without you bending your neck
Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen.

Take the measurement first: stand relaxed, arms hanging, and measure from the floor to the crease of your wrist. For most adults that lands between 34 and 38 inches, which is why that is the standard — but the spread between a 5'4" and a 6'3" person is five inches, and five inches is the difference between comfortable and sore.

Why too low is worse than too high

A bench two inches too high is mildly annoying: you work with your arms more and your shoulders tire. A bench two inches too low makes you lean forward, and leaning forward for three hours is how a weekend project turns into a week of back pain.

So if you are buying a fixed-height bench and your measurement falls between two options, round up. You can always stand on nothing; you cannot un-bend your back.

What the benches in this category actually offer

Every figure is the manufacturer's published height or range.

Two things to notice. The adjustable benches cluster around a 28-40 in. range, which covers seated work through standing assembly for most people. And the fixed steel cabinet benches are all 37.5 in., which is a good standing height — at the taller end of comfortable, deliberately, because the makers also rounded up.

The finest adjustment wins

A six-position bench moves in roughly two-inch steps, which means your ideal height is probably between two of them. CAMMOO's 48 x 24 publishes ten levels at 1.34 inches per step, which is fine enough to actually land on a comfortable elbow height rather than near one.

If you will change the height often — switching between seated detail work and standing assembly in the same session — the FLEXISPOT electric bench is the one to look at. Electric adjustment means you will actually change it, where a manual knob means you will put up with the wrong height because adjusting it is a job.

Height and the rest of the layout

Bench height sets two other things, so decide it before you mount anything to the wall.

  • Pegboard height. Tools want to be at chest height when you are standing at the bench. If the bench is 37 in. and you mount the pegboard at 48 in., the bottom row sits behind your work. Mount it after the bench is at its final height.
  • Task light height. A light directly above the bench wants to be high enough not to be in your way and low enough not to be shadowed by your head. See the garage lighting layout guide.
  • Whether you can use a wall shelf at all. A 65-inch bench with a pegboard back rules out a shelf above it. A 37.5-inch rolling bench does not — see the best rolling workbenches.

The adjustable benches worth buying

Benches whose published range covers the arithmetic above

Each of these publishes an actual height range rather than a single nominal figure, which is what lets you check it against your own wrist measurement before buying.

Why these and not others: the selection criteria for this category.

If you already have a bench

Raising an existing bench is cheap and effective. Bolt-on risers, hardwood blocks under the legs, or a second layer of top all work. The only rule is stability: if the modification lets a loaded bench rock, you have made it worse, not better.

Adding a second layer of top is the version worth considering, because it raises the bench AND gives you a better surface. A 1.5-inch rubberwood or maple slab over an existing top adds that much height and a surface you can clamp to — see workbench top materials.

If you are starting from scratch instead, how to choose a garage workbench covers height alongside the other four decisions.

Questions people actually ask

What is the standard workbench height?

Around 34-36 inches, which is roughly kitchen-counter height and is what most fixed benches are built to. The fixed steel cabinet benches in this category sit at a 37.5 in. working height. Standard is not the same as right for you — the arithmetic below takes two minutes.

How do I measure the right height for me?

Stand relaxed with your arms at your sides and measure from the floor to your wrist crease. That figure is a good general-purpose bench height. For hand-planing go about 2-3 inches lower; for detailed work at eye level go about 4 inches higher.

Is it better to have a bench too high or too low?

Too high. A bench slightly too high means you work with your arms rather than your back; a bench too low means bending over for hours, which is what people actually injure themselves doing. If you have to pick a fixed height and you are unsure, round up.

Should I buy an adjustable-height bench?

If you do more than one kind of work, yes — and the premium is small. Northsky's bench spans 27.9-43.4 in., CAMMOO's 48 x 24 gives ten steps of 1.34 in. each, and both cost about the same as fixed benches of similar size. The FLEXISPOT adjusts electrically if you will change it mid-job.

Can I raise an existing bench?

Yes, and it is the cheapest fix in the garage. Bolt-on bench risers, a second layer of top, or hardwood blocks under the legs all work. Keep it stable: a riser that lets a loaded bench rock is worse than a bench two inches too low.
