One-Car Garage Setup

A standard single bay — roughly 250 square feet — with enough room to work beside the car. Wall storage still wins, but a real bench becomes possible.

Heads up: buy through a link here and we earn a commission from Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — how that works.

The short answer

A standard single bay supports a real 48-inch bench, wall shelving, a 3 x 6 ft overhead rack and a rolling tool chest low enough to park under a shelf. What it does not support is a 60-inch bench, freestanding shelving or a 72-inch cabinet — all of which cost floor you need to walk through.

What a single bay actually allows

Roughly 250 square feet, 11-12 feet wide, with a car occupying about seven feet of that width. So you have four to five feet of working width on one side, or two to three feet on both — and that is the number that decides everything.

What fits comfortably:

  • A 48-inch bench on the back wall or one side. 48 x 24 in. is enough for any garage job.
  • Wall shelving on both side walls, 12 in. deep at head height and 24 in. above windshield height.
  • A 3 x 6 ft overhead rack, which clears a single-bay door track where a 4x8 often does not.
  • A rolling tool chest at 36-37 inches, which parks under a wall shelf.

What does not: a 60 or 70-inch bench, a 72-inch cabinet, freestanding shelving, or a cabinet system.

The bench: 48 inches, and light

CAMMOO's WBC48-S is the right bench for this garage for a specific reason: it weighs 41.2 lb. That is light enough for one person to pick up and move against a wall, which in a single bay is occasionally exactly what you need.

It publishes a 48 x 24 in. solid rubberwood top (clampable, drillable, sandable), a 2,000 lb capacity, and tool-free height adjustment from 28 to 39 inches. What it has is no storage at all — no drawers, no cabinet, no shelf.

That is the right trade here, because in a single bay the storage belongs on the walls rather than under the bench. See the best garage workbenches.

Wall storage: two depths

Use 24-inch shelves high up — above windshield height, where the projection does not matter — for totes and bulk. Use 12-inch shelves at head height, where you will walk underneath them.

FLEXIMOUNTS' WR26BH-V2 publishes 600 lb per shelf across two 2 x 6 ft shelves with eight hooks included, which is the best capacity-per-dollar in the range. The WR16B pair at 12 x 72 in. publishes 900 lb total and is the head-height option.

Check your wall construction first: FLEXIMOUNTS states its shelves cannot be mounted on metal studs.

The overhead rack: 3 x 6, not 4 x 8

FLEXIMOUNTS' GR36B is 72 x 36 in. with a 22-40 in. drop, publishing 900 lb tested / 450 lb rated — the same honest tested-and-rated transparency as the bigger racks, in a footprint that fits a single bay.

The reason to go smaller here is the door track. In many single-bay garages a 48-inch-deep rack fouls the track or the opener, and the 36-inch depth clears it. FLEXIMOUNTS also publishes the useful exception that this model fits exactly 36 in. joist spacing as well as anything up to 24 in.

The tool chest that fits

WEN's GG422B is 42 x 18 x 36.4 in. and publishes eight lockable 100 lb soft-close drawers on 21-gauge steel. It is the cheapest chest on this site with a published per-drawer rating.

The 36.4-inch height is what matters in a single bay: it parks under a 12-inch wall shelf, so the chest and the shelving occupy the same floor footprint. A 72-inch cabinet cannot do that. See the best tool chests for a garage.

    Light, along the sides

    hykolity 4 ft Shop Light, 5,500 lm, 3-CCT / 3-Level

The best-specified 4 ft shop light here: 130 lm/W, three color temperatures and three output levels from one fixture. No published CRI, like everything else in the category.

  • FLEXIMOUNTS 2x6 ft Wall Shelves with 8 Hooks (WR26BH-V2)

    24 in. shelves, high

FLEXIMOUNTS 2x6 ft Wall Shelves with 8 Hooks (WR26BH-V2)

Double the per-shelf rating of the classic WR26B with hooks thrown in, from the same maker, for less. The newer, better buy of the two.

  • FLEXIMOUNTS 1x6 ft Wall Shelves, 2-Pack (WR16B-SBA)

    12 in. shelves, head height

    FLEXIMOUNTS 1x6 ft Wall Shelves, 2-Pack (WR16B-SBA)

The shelf for directly above a workbench: 12 inches deep so you never crack your head, and FLEXIMOUNTS tells you the awkward 24-inch-stud caveat up front.

  • FLEXIMOUNTS 3x6 ft Overhead Rack (GR36B)

    3x6 overhead rack

FLEXIMOUNTS 3x6 ft Overhead Rack (GR36B)

48 in. bench, light enough to move

    CAMMOO WBC48-S 48" Adjustable Workbench

The bench to buy when the budget is tight and the garage is small: a real wood top and tool-free height adjustment, with no storage and no pretence of any.

  • WEN 42" Premium Rolling Cabinet (GG422B)

Rolling chest, parks under a shelf

WEN 42" Premium Rolling Cabinet (GG422B)

    Pegboard above the bench

    Wall Control Metal Pegboard Pack, 2 x (32 x 16 in.) (30-P-3232B)

The pegboard worth buying. The pre-formed flange and steel holes are why your tools still hang straight in five years, and it takes generic pegs too.

    Hardware bins

    Akro-Mils 30230 AkroBins, 11 x 5 x 5 in., 12-Pack

The layout that works

  1. Back wall: the bench, with pegboard above it at chest height and a 12-inch shelf above that.
  2. One side wall: the shelving, 24 in. high up, 12 in. at head height.
  3. Other side wall: the rail for long-handled tools, low, plus hooks for bikes and the ladder.
  4. Ceiling: the rack, positioned over the back half of the bay where the car's hood is lower.
  5. Beside the bench: the rolling chest, under the shelf.

If the garage is tighter than this

If the gap you walk through with the car parked is under about three feet, read the small garage page instead — it assumes a folding bench and nothing on the floor at all.

For the costed version of this build, garage setup under $1,000.

Questions people actually ask

What size workbench fits a one-car garage?

Forty-eight inches. It fits a standard single bay with room to walk past, and 48 x 24 in. is enough surface for almost any garage job. CAMMOO's WBC48-S weighs 41 lb, so one person can move it out of the way entirely — which in a single bay matters.

Should I use a 4x8 or 3x6 overhead rack?

3 x 6 ft in a single bay. FLEXIMOUNTS publishes 900 lb tested / 450 lb rated on the GR36B, and 72 x 36 in. fits over a single bay without crowding the door track. A 4x8 frequently does not clear the track in a single-bay garage.

Can I have a tool chest and a bench in a one-car garage?

Yes, if the chest is a rolling one at 37 in. or lower so it parks under a wall shelf. WEN's GG422B is 36.4 in. high and publishes 100 lb per drawer. A 72-inch cabinet will not fit alongside a bench in a single bay.

How much lighting does a one-car garage need?

Roughly 15,000 lumens for a 250 sq ft bay at 60 lumens per square foot — two fixtures at 7,500 lm, or three at 5,500. Mount them along the sides rather than over the center line, so the car does not block the light.

What is the biggest mistake in a one-car garage?

Buying a 60 or 70-inch bench. It is most of one wall, it stops you parking comfortably, and the extra surface over a 48-inch bench is rarely used. The second mistake is freestanding shelving, which costs floor you cannot spare.
