The short answer
Wall-mounted shelving is the cheapest way to clear a garage floor: a pair of FLEXIMOUNTS 2 x 6 ft shelves gives you 24 square feet of storage at zero floor cost, with 600 lb per shelf published. For freestanding shelving, REIBII's 2-pack is the only one here publishing both a per-tier rating (480 lb) and a post thickness (1.4 mm) — the two numbers you actually need.
The best-documented shelving here: a published per-tier rating and a published post thickness, in a two-pack. Just check that 16 inches is deep enough for your totes.
Genuinely well-engineered against sway, with interconnecting uprights — reported through a 5,000 lb total that tells you nothing about what one shelf will take.
The shelf for directly above a workbench: 12 inches deep so you never crack your head, and FLEXIMOUNTS tells you the awkward 24-inch-stud caveat up front.

Why shelving beats everything else on value
A pair of 2 x 6 ft wall shelves costs less than a single tall cabinet and holds more, while using no floor area at all. That is the whole argument and it is hard to beat.
The reasons it works in a garage specifically: you can see what is on an open shelf, which is most of what organizing actually means; wall shelves put things at the height you use them, unlike an overhead rack; and because there are no doors or locks, you are paying for steel rather than for hardware.
The exception is anything that must be hidden or locked, which is what a cabinet is for. Most garages need one cabinet and a lot of shelving, and buy it the other way round.
Wall-mounted: the FLEXIMOUNTS range, decoded
FLEXIMOUNTS dominates wall shelving and deserves to, for one reason beyond the hardware: the listings tell you what the product cannot do. Supported stud spacings are named (16, 18 or 24 in.). Concrete and brick are fine. Metal studs are explicitly not supported. On the 1 x 6 ft model, the listing even warns that at 24 in. stud spacing the two shelves must be installed separately.
That is the information that prevents a returned product, and almost nobody else in this category provides it.
All figures are FLEXIMOUNTS' published ratings.

Above a bench — 12 in. deep clears your head
Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen.
The WR26BH-V2 is the one to buy: double the per-shelf rating of the older WR26B, eight hooks included, published tubing dimensions (0.8 x 0.6 in.), and usually cheaper. The WR16B at 12 inches deep is the specific answer for shelving above a workbench.
Freestanding: the per-tier problem
Freestanding shelving is where this category's specification habits are worst. The headline numbers are enormous — 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 6,000 lb — and almost all of them are whole-unit totals with no per-tier figure.
REIBII is the exception and it is why it tops the freestanding ranking: 480 lb per tier and 1.4 mm rolled-edge steel posts, both published. Those are the two numbers you need — what one shelf takes, and what the structure is made of. Rolled-edge posts are also genuinely stiffer than flat-folded ones at the same thickness.
Among the total-only units, the engineering descriptions are still worth reading. SISESOL's 71-inch unit uses one-piece uprights with no joints and eight lateral stabilizer bars — sway is how tall shelving actually fails, so bracing against it is the right priority. Letaya's units use multi-fold bent uprights with diagonal braces and locking shelf pins.
Depth: the test that settles it
Put a 27-gallon tote on the shelf. Does it fit front-to-back? That is the depth test, and it is the one that matters because totes are what garages store.
24 in. — a tote fits with room over. FLEXIMOUNTS 2 ft shelves, VEVOR, Letaya, SISESOL.
18 in. — a tote overhangs. REIBII 3200 wire, Gladiator-depth cabinets.
16 in. — a tote overhangs badly. REIBII 2400 2-pack.
12.6 in. — pantry depth. Sakugi; useful only in a gap nothing else fits.
12 in. — the right depth ABOVE a bench, where you want clearance for your head.
The REIBII 2-pack is the one case where a great spec sheet meets a limiting depth: 480 lb per tier is excellent, and 16 inches will not take your totes. Check what you are actually storing before you let the ratings decide.
Wire shelving for a damp garage
Most unheated garages condense in spring, and anything sitting on a solid shelf in a puddle stays in the puddle. Wire shelves drain and dry, which is a genuine functional advantage rather than a styling choice.
REIBII's 3,200 lb wire unit is the pick, and it publishes something nobody else does: a 25 mm rod diameter, plus three V-type reinforced braces per shelf, which is the correct fix for wire-shelf sag. The cost of wire is that everything loose needs a bin — see the best garage storage bins.
Anchor the tall ones
Freestanding shelving over about 70 inches should be anchored, and the lighter it is, the more it needs it. Sakugi's 17 lb, 71-inch rack includes a wall-fixing kit for exactly that reason — a tall, light, loaded unit is the easiest thing in a garage to pull over.
Load the bottom tiers heavy and the top tiers light, keep anything a child might climb off the lower shelves, and put two brackets into studs. It costs almost nothing.

Then put things in bins
Shelving solves where things go; bins solve what things go in. An open shelf of loose items is a tidier version of the same problem. Standardize on one bin system with a catalog behind it — see the best garage storage bins.
For the overall sequence, how to organize a garage puts shelving first for the same reasons this page does, and garage setup under $500 shows how far the first $500 goes when it starts with walls.
Questions people actually ask
What is the best garage shelving?+
FLEXIMOUNTS WR26BH-V2 wall shelves if you want the floor clear — 600 lb per shelf published, 12 linear feet, and they cost you no floor space. REIBII's 2-pack freestanding units if you want shelving you can move: it is the only freestanding product here publishing both a per-tier figure (480 lb) and a post thickness (1.4 mm).
How much weight can garage shelving hold per shelf?+
Where it is published: REIBII states 480 lb per tier, FLEXIMOUNTS states 300-600 lb per wall shelf depending on model. Most freestanding units publish only a total — 2,000 to 6,000 lb — with no per-tier figure, which is the least useful way to state a capacity. Full detail on garage shelving load ratings.
How deep should garage shelving be?+
Twenty-four inches takes a 27-gallon tote front-to-back, which is the practical test. Eighteen inches and the tote overhangs; sixteen inches and it overhangs badly. For shelves above a bench, 12 inches is right — deeper and you crack your head on it.
Can I mount wall shelves on metal studs?+
Not these. FLEXIMOUNTS states explicitly that its shelves cannot be mounted on metal-stud walls, and that honesty is worth noting because it would otherwise cost you a returned product and a hole in the wall. Check your wall construction before ordering wall shelving.
Do I need to anchor freestanding shelving?+
Over about 70 inches tall, yes. The failure mode is tipping forward when you pull something off a top shelf, not the shelf breaking. Sakugi includes a wall-fixing kit with its 17 lb rack precisely because a light tall unit is the easiest to tip.
Wire shelving or solid?+
Wire drains and dries, which matters above a slab that gets damp — and most unheated garages do, every spring. Solid shelves hold small items and stop things falling through. If damp is your problem, buy wire and put everything loose in bins.
