Garage Storage

The Best Garage Storage Bins

The difference between a tidy shelf and a shelf of loose junk. One product here publishes a per-bin rating; the rest want you not to ask.

Heads up: buy through a link here and we earn a commission from Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — how that works.

The short answer

For small parts, Akro-Mils 30230 AkroBins are the ones to standardize on: 30 lb per bin published, louvered-panel mounting as well as stacking, and real label holders in the catalog, so the system still matches in five years. For seasonal storage overhead, Sterilite's 27-gallon lidded totes are the size overhead racks are designed around — check they fit your rack lengthways.

Bins are what makes shelving work

A shelf of loose items is a tidier version of a floor of loose items. The shelf solves where things live; the bin solves what they live in, and without the second half the first half does not hold.

The specific thing bins fix is small hardware. Screws, nuts, washers, fittings, connectors, zip ties — the category that defeats every other storage solution, because the items are too small to shelve and too numerous to hang. A wall of labeled bins is the only thing that genuinely solves it.

One product publishes a rating. One.

Akro-Mils publishes 30 lb per bin for the 30230 AkroBins. IRIS publishes nothing for either of its ranges. Sterilite publishes nothing for its totes (and its listing data reports a 0 lb shipping weight, which is plainly an error). Mighty Tuff publishes nothing.

For bulky light things — sports gear, hoses, extension cords — that absence is tolerable. For dense heavy things it is not, and dense heavy things are exactly what small bins hold. A bin full of bolts is heavy, and a bin that bows under load stops stacking, which is the only reason you bought a stacking bin.

Akro-Mils' 30 lb is also an industrial rating from a company whose whole business is parts bins. The 30230 is a catalog part number with dividers and label holders listed as accessories — that is what a system looks like, as against a pack of tubs.

Three jobs, three bin types

Small parts: on a shelf or a panel

Akro-Mils 30230: 11 x 5 x 5 in., twelve per pack, 30 lb each, one-piece industrial molding with reinforced side ribs, an extra-wide stacking ledge and an anti-slide stop. They hang on louvered panels as well as stacking, which means the same bin works on a wall and on a shelf.

IRIS's 8-pack (13 x 6 x 5 in.) is the budget alternative: slightly longer, made in the USA, U-shaped open front that doubles as a handle, and no rating, no panel mounting and no label holders. Fine for a shelf; not a system.

Things you use weekly: open-front shelf bins

IRIS's 3-pack of large open-front bins and Mighty Tuff's jumbo 3-pack both do the same job: big enough for real garage items, open at the front so you reach in without unstacking, and nesting when empty so the off-season ones store flat.

Both are for bulky and light. Neither has a lid, so neither belongs overhead, and neither publishes a weight.

Seasonal storage: lidded totes overhead

Sterilite's 27-gallon industrial tote is the one, for one reason beyond the size: the lid has built-in keyholes for tie-downs. If a tote ever rides in a truck bed or on a cargo carrier, that is the feature that stops it leaving. The channeled walls also resist the bulge that makes a full cheap tote unstackable.

Twenty-seven gallons is the size the overhead-rack market is built around. The measurement to check: 28.5 in. long will not sit crossways on a 24-inch-deep rack. See the best overhead garage storage racks.

Why standardizing matters more than the brand

The thing that makes a bin wall work is that every bin is the same, so they stack square and the labels line up. The thing that breaks it is buying a second batch two years later in a slightly different shape.

Which is the real argument for Akro-Mils: the 30230 is a part number in a catalog with dividers, label holders and sibling sizes listed alongside it. You can still be adding matching bins in a decade. An unbranded 6-pack cannot promise that, which is worth considering before you commit a whole wall to one.

Label them

Unlabelled bins are opaque boxes, and an opaque box is where things go to be forgotten. This is the cheapest and most-skipped step in organizing a garage.

Akro-Mils sells proper label holders as an accessory. Everything else here takes a strip of masking tape and a marker, which works perfectly and costs nothing. Either way, do it as you fill them, because labeling 40 bins afterwards is a job nobody does.

#1Best for small parts, properly

Akro-Mils 30230 AkroBins, 11 x 5 x 5 in., 12-Pack

8.6/10our score, from published specs

The small-parts bin to standardize on. A published per-bin rating, louvered-panel mounting and real label holders — the only one here that is a system rather than a tub.

What the maker publishes

  • 11 in. x 5 in. x 5 in., 12 bins
  • Published 30 lb per bin
  • One-piece industrial plastic; reinforced side ribs
  • Extra-wide stacking ledge; anti-slide stop
  • Optional dividers and label holders; works with louvered panels

How it scores

Capacity

9.0
Expandability
10.0
Value
7.5

Where it wins

  • Publishes a per-bin weight rating (30 lb), which consumer bins never do
  • Hangs on louvered panels as well as stacking, so it works on the wall and on a shelf
  • Label holders exist as a real accessory — this is the system that scales past 12 bins
  • Industrial one-piece molding: no seams to split

Where it doesn’t

  • Dividers and label holders are sold separately, so the real system costs more than the bins
  • 11 x 5 x 5 in. is small; this is fasteners and fittings, not power tools
  • Priced well above a 12-pack of no-name bins

  • A lid, which every bin above lacks — essential for anything stored overhead under a dusty ceiling

Where it doesn’t

  • No weight rating published
  • 28.5 in. long will not sit crossways on a 24 in. deep rack

What the maker publishes

  • 13 in. L x 6 in. W x 5 in. H, 8 bins
  • BPA-free plastic, made in the USA

Where it wins

  • Eight bins at a price that makes standardizing a whole shelf affordable
  • The U-front is both a handle and a window into the bin
  • Slightly longer than the Akro-Mils 30230, which suits long fittings
  • Made in the USA at an import price

Where it doesn’t

  • No per-bin weight rating

Where the bins go

Small bins on a shelf above the bench or on a louvered panel. Lidded totes overhead. Jumbo open-front bins at floor level for the bulky awkward things. See the best garage shelving for the shelf and pegboard hooks and accessories for the hook-mounted bins that come with accessory kits.

If the problem you are solving is specifically a garage full of unsorted tools, organizing a garage full of tools is the page written for that.

Questions people actually ask

What size bins should I buy for a garage?

Two sizes, for two jobs. Small bins around 11 x 5 x 5 in. (Akro-Mils 30230) for fasteners and fittings on a shelf or a louvered panel. And 27-gallon lidded totes for seasonal storage on an overhead rack. Anything in between tends to end up as a box of unsorted things.

How much weight can a storage bin hold?

Akro-Mils publishes 30 lb per bin and is the only product here that publishes anything. IRIS, Sterilite's totes, and Mighty Tuff all publish nothing. For dense heavy items — fasteners, fittings, metal parts — that absence matters, because a bin that bows is a bin that will not stack.

Open-front bins or lidded totes?

Open front for things you use often on a shelf at eye level; lidded for anything stored overhead or long-term. A ceiling is dusty and an open bin up there fills with debris. Open-front bins also let you see what is inside without lifting the one above off.

Why do bins need to be a system?

Because you will buy more. Akro-Mils bins hang on louvered panels as well as stacking, take optional dividers, and have real label holders in the catalog — so the dozen you buy today still match the dozen you buy in three years. A one-off pack of unbranded tubs will have changed shape by then.

Will a 27-gallon tote fit on my overhead rack?

Lengthways, yes. Sterilite's 27-gallon tote is 28.5 in. long, so on a 24-inch-deep rack it has to run front-to-back rather than crossways. On a 48-inch-deep 4x8 rack it fits either way. Measure before you buy a dozen.
