The short answer
The best wall-mounted garage shelves are the FLEXIMOUNTS WR26BH-V2: 600 lb published per shelf across two 2 x 6 ft shelves, eight hooks underneath, published steel tubing dimensions and tool-free spring-pin assembly. Go 2 x 4 ft (WR24B) for a short wall, 1 x 6 ft (WR16B) for above a bench, or the Rubbermaid FastTrack 3-shelf kit at 350 lb per shelf if you want the bank to relocate later.
The shelf for directly above a workbench: 12 inches deep so you never crack your head, and FLEXIMOUNTS tells you the awkward 24-inch-stud caveat up front.

Why a wall shelf beats a freestanding rack on floor space
A freestanding shelving unit 24 inches deep takes 24 inches of floor, forever, including the part under the bottom shelf you cannot reach. A wall shelf at the same depth takes none — and it starts at whatever height you choose, so a car door still opens underneath it.
In a one-car garage, two 2 x 6 ft wall shelves give back twelve square feet of floor. That is roughly the footprint of a workbench. The trade is that the load now goes into your wall framing rather than into the slab, which is why every number on this page is conditional on the mounting.
Loads exactly as each maker publishes them. Note that FLEXIMOUNTS quotes WR26B as a per-unit figure and WR26BH as a per-shelf figure — read which you are being given.

The newer FLEXIMOUNTS is the better buy, and it is cheaper
This is unusual enough to say plainly: the WR26BH-V2 publishes 600 lb per shelf against the older WR26B's 350 lb per unit, includes eight hooks the older model does not, assembles with no tools, and generally costs less. Same maker, same 2 x 6 ft size.
The catch worth knowing is weight: 30.3 lb of frame carrying a 1,200 lb total claim. That is a big number on a light structure, and it means the mounting does all the work. Into studs at the stated spacing, fine. Into drywall anchors, the rating is fiction. The hooks also hang below the shelf, so this is not the shelf to put directly above a workbench.
The older WR26B keeps one advantage: FLEXIMOUNTS publishes its exact stud-spacing compatibility (16, 18 or 24 inches) and states outright that it must not go on metal studs. That sentence has saved more installations than any capacity figure on this page.
Depth is a head-height decision
Twenty-four inches of depth takes four totes per shelf and is the right choice on an open wall. Above a bench it is wrong, because you will be leaning in under it for the next ten years.
The 1 x 6 ft WR16B is 12 inches deep for that reason — enough for paint, parts bins and bottles, shallow enough to clear your head while you work. FLEXIMOUNTS also publishes the awkward caveat up front: at 24-inch stud spacing, common in newer construction, the two shelves have to be installed separately rather than as a pair.

Where it wins
+12 in. deep clears your head while you work — the right shelf to put above a bench
+900 lb total on a 12 in. shelf is a lot of paint and parts bins

Where it doesn’t
−12 in. deep will not take a 27-gallon tote at all

−The 24 in. stud caveat means a separate install for each shelf in newer construction

Where it wins
+A full 4 ft of shelf that relocates along the channel without touching the wall again

Find the studs before you order
Every rating on this page assumes a fixing into solid wood framing at the spacing the maker states. So the order of operations is: find and mark the studs, measure the spacing, check it against the listing, then buy. Doing it the other way around is how a 600 lb shelf ends up carrying 40 lb of drywall anchor.
The FLEXIMOUNTS WR26BH-V2. It publishes 600 lb per shelf — nearly double the older WR26B from the same maker — states its actual steel tubing dimensions, includes eight hooks underneath, and assembles with spring pins and no tools. Two 2x6 ft shelves give you twelve linear feet of storage off the floor.
How much weight can a wall-mounted garage shelf hold?+
Published ratings on this page run from 300 lb to 600 lb per shelf on bracket shelves, and 350 lb per shelf on the Rubbermaid rail kit. All of those assume the mounting is into solid wood studs at the stated spacing. A shelf anchored into drywall alone holds a small fraction of its rating, and the rating stops meaning anything.
Can I mount these on metal studs?+
Not the FLEXIMOUNTS shelves — the maker says so explicitly, which is more honest than most of this category. Check your wall before ordering. Metal-stud construction needs a mounting approach these brackets are not designed for.
How deep should a garage wall shelf be?+
Twenty-four inches if it is going on an open wall and holding totes; twelve inches if it is going above a workbench, where a deep shelf is something you will hit your head on every session. The 1x6 ft FLEXIMOUNTS is the above-the-bench shelf for exactly that reason.
Bracket shelves or a rail system?+
Bracket shelves for the highest per-shelf rating and the lowest price. A rail system if you expect the layout to change, because the whole bank slides along the rail later instead of being re-drilled. The Rubbermaid FastTrack kit publishes 350 lb per shelf, which is the figure that makes rail shelving worth considering at all.
