Heads up: buy through a link here and we earn a commission from Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — how that works.
The short answer
For the money, the SISESOL 72 x 36 x 18 in. cabinet: 900 lb published across five adjustable shelves with a three-point lock, at a price well below the brand-name cabinets in the same footprint. Pick Yizosh instead if you want the highest published per-shelf figure (180 lb), Letaya if you want both a steel thickness and a per-shelf number, and Greenvelly if the budget is tight and the cabinet has to be anti-tip fixed.
The clearest spec sheet among the budget cabinets: steel thickness and per-shelf rating both stated. That is worth more than another big total-capacity number.
The budget pick, and an honest one: it publishes thickness, per-shelf load and an anti-tip fixing, then charges less than anything comparable. It is just smaller than it looks in the photos.

Value in this category is a specification problem
Every cabinet on this page costs a fraction of a Gladiator or a NewAge unit at a similar size. That is not the interesting part. The interesting part is that the cheap tier publishes *different* specifications from the expensive tier, which makes a straight price-per-cubic-foot comparison misleading.
The expensive cabinets publish a warranty, a gauge and a per-shelf load. The cheap cabinets publish a headline capacity and, if you are lucky, one of the other three. So the practical value test is not "what does it cost per cubic foot" — it is "which numbers am I getting, and which am I being asked to assume?"
Every figure here is the maker's own published claim, reproduced as stated. Blank cells are specifications the listing does not provide — not zeros.

The per-shelf number is the one that matters
You never load a cabinet. You load a shelf, and then the shelf above it, and the one you reach for most is usually at chest height with the heaviest thing on it.
Yizosh publishes 180 lb per shelf, which is the highest per-shelf figure in this price band and about as much as you would ever put on an 18-inch-deep shelf. Letaya publishes 120 lb — middling, honest, and enough for bins and paint but not for cast iron. Greenvelly publishes 150 lb across four shelves. SISESOL publishes 900 lb and declines to say how it divides, which in practice means you should assume the shelves are equal and plan for 180 lb each while loading the bottom one heaviest anyway.
The reason this matters more on a cheap cabinet than an expensive one is deflection. A thin shelf under a heavy load does not fail; it bows, and a bowed shelf stops supporting its own adjustment clips evenly. The full version of this argument is in garage shelving load ratings.
What the price actually removes
Three things disappear as you come down the price ladder, and only one of them is a real risk.
The warranty. None of the four steel cabinets here publishes one. That is the honest cost of the price, and it is why we do not rank them above the brand-name options in the main cabinet roundup.
The gauge. SISESOL and Yizosh do not publish a steel thickness. Letaya and Greenvelly publish 0.8 mm, which is thin but at least checkable against the assembled weight.
The anti-tip fixing. This is the one that is a genuine safety matter, and Greenvelly is the only cabinet here that calls one out. A 72-inch cabinet with a loaded top shelf and an open door is a tipping hazard regardless of price — fix every tall cabinet to a stud, whether the listing mentions it or not.
The one that is not steel
The Sterilite 4-shelf utility cabinet is on this page because it is the right answer to a question steel cannot answer. It publishes a recommended 40 lb per shelf — the lowest figure here by a wide margin — and it is resin, so it does not rust, dent, chip or peel.
In a garage that condenses in spring and freezes in winter, powder-coated steel eventually blooms rust at every scratch. Resin does not. Buy it for cleaning supplies, lawn chemicals, paint and light bins, accept that the shelves will bow under a sustained load, and note that the lock is a padlock you supply yourself.

Where it wins
+Publishes both the steel thickness (0.8 mm) AND a per-shelf rating (120 lb) — the pair you actually need
+Anti-collision reinforcements on the doors, so they close quietly instead of banging
+Packaging is explicitly built against shipping dents, which is the usual failure mode for flat steel
+Both paper and video assembly instructions
Where it doesn’t
−0.8 mm is thinner than NewAge's 24-gauge (roughly 0.6 mm) — different measurement, and the listing does not help you compare
−120 lb per shelf is middling: fine for bins, not for cast iron

Greenvelly 72 x 32 x 16 in. Locking Cabinet

The budget pick, and an honest one: it publishes thickness, per-shelf load and an anti-tip fixing, then charges less than anything comparable. It is just smaller than it looks in the photos.
Buy it for a garage that sweats. It will not rust and it will not hold much — and Sterilite says the 40 lb limit out loud, which is more than most.

Where it wins
+Resin does not rust, which is the single thing steel cabinets do badly in an unheated garage
+No-tool assembly in minutes — genuinely, not as a marketing claim
+Publishes a conservative 40 lb per shelf rather than an optimistic total
+39.5 lb means one person moves it
Where it doesn’t
−40 lb per shelf is the lowest here; this is for cleaning supplies and light bins, full stop
−Takes a padlock rather than having a lock, so that is another purchase
−Resin flexes and the shelves will bow under a sustained load
Where to spend the money you saved
A budget cabinet plus a rated wall shelf beats one expensive cabinet in most garages, because the two solve different problems: the cabinet hides and locks, the shelf gets things off the floor at a much lower cost per square foot. The best wall-mounted garage shelves covers the second half of that pairing.
If this is the first real purchase for the garage rather than an addition, garage setup under $1,000 and garage setup under $500 both put a cabinet in a sensible order against shelving, a bench and a wall system.
Questions people actually ask
Which garage storage cabinet is the best value?+
The SISESOL 72 x 36 x 18 in. cabinet. It publishes 900 lb total across five shelves and a three-point lock at a price well under the brand-name cabinets at the same footprint. What you give up is a warranty — SISESOL publishes none — and a per-shelf figure, so you cannot plan a deliberately heavy bottom shelf.
Is a per-shelf rating better than a total capacity figure?+
Much better, because you load a shelf, not a cabinet. A 900 lb total tells you nothing about whether the top shelf will take a box of bar clamps. Yizosh publishes 180 lb per shelf and Letaya publishes 120 lb, and those are the numbers you can actually plan against.
What does the cheap tier leave out?+
Three things, consistently: a published warranty, a published steel thickness, and an anti-tip fixing. Greenvelly is the exception on the last one — it calls out an anti-tip wall-fixing design, which is the safety feature this whole price band usually ignores.
Should I buy one big cabinet or two small ones?+
Two smaller cabinets, if the wall allows it. Two 32-inch cabinets give you two lockable zones, fit around a window or a service panel, and are each a one-person carry. One 36-inch cabinet is cheaper per cubic foot and commits a single run of wall.
Do steel cabinets rust in an unheated garage?+
Powder-coated steel is fine until the coating is scratched, and then the scratch rusts. If the garage genuinely sweats — condensation on the floor in spring, rust blooming on bare tools — a resin cabinet is the honest answer, and the Sterilite here is the one on this page.
