The Best Garage Workbench and Storage Combos

One purchase instead of two: benches that bring their own drawers, cabinet and pegboard rather than leaving you to buy a wall as well.

Heads up: buy through a link here and we earn a commission from Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — how that works.

The short answer

The best garage workbench and storage combo is the HAK 48 in. bench: a pry-resistant locking cabinet, two drawers, three sides of pegboard and a 6 in. top shelf, on a frame whose thickness (1.2 mm) the maker actually publishes. Choose the Eltean 48 in. instead for the highest published capacity, the Rumetol 55 in. for six drawers and wheels, or the Gladiator Foldaway if the garage still has to park a car.

What a bench "with storage" actually buys you

Search this category and every listing claims storage. The word covers four genuinely different things, and the price gap between them is small enough that it is worth knowing which one you are getting.

  • A lower shelf. Open, unrated on most benches, and useful for a shop vac. This is the cheapest kind of storage and it is not what this page is about.
  • Drawers. The thing you use twenty times a session. Count them, and look at whether they are all the same depth — a bank of identical shallow drawers has nowhere for a drill.
  • An enclosed cabinet. Keeps dust off and, with a lock, keeps hands out. This is the feature that makes a bench usable in a shared garage.
  • Pegboard on the bench. Wall storage you do not have to put on the wall. In a rental or on a masonry wall this is the difference between having hanging storage and not.
Capacity figures are each maker's own published claim. Where a maker quotes a whole-frame static total rather than a work-surface rating, that is noted — the two are not the same number.

The lock is the spec worth reading twice

Four of these five benches lock something. Only one of them says anything about how.

HAK publishes a pry-resistant lock on the main cabinet. Eltean and Rumetol publish keyed locks without describing the mechanism. Gladiator publishes per-door load figures and no lock at all. On a bench that is going to hold cordless tool batteries worth more than the bench, that distinction is not pedantry — a single cam latch in thin sheet steel opens with a screwdriver, and the makers who know their lock is better than that tend to say so.

What none of them lock is the drawers. If the tools that need securing are hand tools rather than a few boxed items, a bench is the wrong product and a lockable tool chest is the right one. What size tool chest do I need works through the sizing.

The pegboard-on-the-bench advantage

HAK, Eltean, Rumetol and MUWOOD all carry their pegboard on the bench frame. It sounds like a detail and it changes what the bench is.

A wall-mounted board needs studs, and in a lot of garages the wall behind the bench is bare block, finished drywall you would rather not drill, or somebody else's property. A board on the bench needs none of that. It also moves with the bench — so when you decide the bench belongs on the other wall, the storage does not have to be rebuilt. The trade is height: these benches stand 65 inches tall with the board fitted, so you need clear wall above the bench rather than clear studs behind it.

If you want a genuinely large hanging wall rather than a board above the bench, the bench-mounted version will not be enough, and the panel systems in the best pegboard for a garage and the best slatwall panels are the next step up.

Six drawers, or sixty inches of top

The two mid-range picks here pull in opposite directions, and the decision is about what you make rather than what you own.

The Rumetol 55 in. rolling bench has the best drawer layout of anything on this page: two tall drawers and four short ones, a lockable magnetic cabinet with an adjustable interior shelf, and a dedicated screwdriver slot in the handle. Its top is a rubber mat over steel, so nothing clamps to it directly, and the published total is 1,000 lb rather than the 2,500 lb the fixed steel benches claim.

The MUWOOD WB0006 goes the other way: 60 inches of solid rubberwood at a published 1.2 in. thickness on a 1.3 mm steel frame, six height settings from 28 to 40 inches, and a pegboard with a section laid out for parts bins. What it does not do is tell you how many drawers it has — they are in the title and nowhere in the specs — and it locks nothing.

#1Best for locking tool storage

HAK 48" Workbench with Lockable Cabinet

8.3/10our score, from published specs

Buy this one for the lock. A pry-resistant cabinet plus a published 1.2 mm frame thickness is a more useful pair of facts than another four-figure capacity claim.

What the maker publishes

  • 65 in. H x 47 in. W x 23.6 in. D (maker's figures)
  • 2,500 lb static load test claimed; 1.2 mm steel frame with triangular bracing
  • Pry-resistant lock on the main cabinet
  • Three-sided pegboard, 6 in. top extension shelf
  • Magnetic LED strip, 3000K-6000K, dimmable

How it scores

Where it wins

  • Publishes an actual frame thickness (1.2 mm) and a bracing description, which almost nothing at this price does
  • Pry-resistant cabinet lock, not just a keyed latch
  • Three-sided pegboard turns the bench itself into the wall storage
  • The 6 in. top shelf is where the lubricants and the tape measure live instead of under your work

Where it doesn’t

  • All-steel top rings and dents; it is not the surface for finish woodwork
  • 65 in. tall with the pegboard, so it needs clear wall above the bench
  • Sold under a brand with no published warranty terms we could find

#2Best for maximum rated load

Eltean 48" Heavy Duty Steel Workbench

8.5/10our score, from published specs

The steel-cabinet bench to buy if you want the highest published capacity and a lock, and you have 48 inches of wall you are never going to need back.

What the maker publishes

  • 24 in. D x 48 in. W x 65 in. H (maker's figures)
  • 2,500 lb total static capacity claimed, cold-rolled steel construction
  • Locking cabinet door, two drawers on slides, top tray
  • No-drill pegboard — mounts to the bench, not your wall
  • Magnetic LED strip, three color temperatures, dimmable
  • 100.3 lb shipping weight

How it scores

Rated capacity
9.5

8.0

Where it wins

  • The highest published static rating in this group, with the bottom cabinet adding real stability
  • Pegboard mounts to the bench itself, which is the right answer in a rental or on block walls
  • Lockable cabinet door with keys — the only bench here that secures anything
  • Magnetic light strip repositions, so you can kill the shadow instead of working around it

Where it doesn’t

  • 2,500 lb is a static, evenly distributed figure; treat it as a ceiling, not a working number
  • 65 in. of height means it does not slide under a wall-mounted shelf
  • Drawer slides are described but not rated, so per-drawer capacity is unknown

#3Best for six drawers, locked

Rumetol YDGZT-R 55" Rolling Workbench

7.8/10our score, from published specs

Functionally the same rolling cabinet-bench as the Eltean, with a better drawer mix and a higher price. Buy whichever is cheaper on the day.

What the maker publishes

  • 37.5 in. H x 55 in. W x 19.7 in. D; high-strength steel
  • 1,000 lb claimed total load capacity
  • 6 drawers (2 tall, 4 short) plus lockable magnetic-door cabinet

Where it wins

  • Two tall drawers as well as four short ones, so bulky hand tools get a home
  • Lockable magnetic cabinet door with an adjustable shelf inside
  • Built-in drawer handles let you stand right against the bench without a handle in your hip
  • Pegboard sides vent the cabinet — relevant for glue and paint storage

Where it doesn’t

  • Priced above the near-identical Eltean while offering the same 1,000 lb rating
  • Rubber-mat top rather than wood or enamelled steel: it will not take a clamp face
  • Assembly is explicitly a two-person job per the maker

#4Best for wood top plus drawers

MUWOOD WB0006 60" Workbench with Drawers

8.0/10our score, from published specs

A 60-inch solid rubberwood top with a published thickness and frame gauge, let down by a listing that cannot keep its own numbers straight.

What the maker publishes

  • 60 in. x 22 in. x 1.2 in. solid rubberwood top
  • 1.3 mm steel frame; over 2,000 lb claimed capacity
  • 6-level height adjustment, 28 in. to 40 in., no tools
  • Large pegboard with a section sized for hanging parts bins
  • ETL outlets: 4 AC, 2 USB; strip light included
  • 105.1 lb shipping weight

How it scores

Rated capacity
8.5
Top material
9.5
Storage
7.0
Spec transparency
6.5
Value
7.5

Where it wins

  • Publishes the top thickness (1.2 in.) and the frame gauge (1.3 mm) — both, which is unusual
  • The pegboard is laid out for parts bins, not just hooks, which is what small-hardware chaos actually needs
  • 60 in. of solid rubberwood at a mid-range price
  • Height range reaches 40 in., tall enough for comfortable standing work if you are over six foot

Where it doesn’t

  • The listing states a 6.6-inch cord length, which is plainly a typo for 6.6 feet — a spec-sheet error, not a product fault, but it is the sheet you are buying from
  • Drawers are mentioned in the title but neither counted nor rated in the bullets
  • 22 in. depth again — shallow for automotive work

#5Best for a bench in a garage that still parks a car

Gladiator Ready-to-Assemble Foldaway Work Station (GAFS42KD)

7.6/10our score, from published specs

The right bench for a single-car garage that still parks a car: stainless, documented, and gone when you fold it. Load it like the 200 lb figure means it, because it does.

What the maker publishes

  • 1-1/2 in. thick solid stainless steel top
  • Published: 200 lb total; 50 lb on the fold-down shelf, 50 lb per door, 50 lb per shelf
  • Power cord access port for charging tool batteries
  • Corrosion-resistant hard coat finish

How it scores

Capacity
4.5
Build
8.5
Spec transparency
10.0
Space efficiency
9.5
Value
6.0

Where it wins

  • A stainless top is the one bench surface that does not care about brake fluid, solvent or a wet part
  • Folds down out of the way, which is the difference between having a bench and having a car in the garage
  • The cord port is a small thing you will use every week if you charge tool batteries
  • Every load figure is published, including the per-door and per-shelf numbers nobody else states

Where it doesn’t

  • 200 lb total is low for a workbench — this is an assembly and charging station, not somewhere to press bearings
  • Stainless scratches and shows every mark; it will not look new after a month
  • Priced like a full bench while giving you a fold-down work surface

Where a combo bench stops being the answer

A combo bench is the right first purchase and a poor fifth one. Two drawers and a cabinet absorb the tools you own in year one; they do not absorb a growing socket collection, and no bench in this category publishes a per-drawer load rating. A dedicated chest publishes 100 lb per drawer and means it.

The honest sequence for most garages is a bench with modest built-in storage now, a tool chest when the drawers overflow, and a wall system for everything with a handle on it. Garage setup under $1,000 puts that order of purchase against real prices, and the two-car garage plan places all three without losing a parking bay.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best garage workbench with storage?

The HAK 48-inch bench, because it is the only one here that publishes both a frame thickness (1.2 mm) and a pry-resistant cabinet lock rather than a plain keyed latch — and it adds three sides of pegboard plus a 6 in. top shelf. The Eltean 48-inch is the alternative if you want the highest published capacity instead of the best lock.

Is a combo bench better than buying a bench and a tool chest separately?

For a first garage, yes — a combo bench costs less than a bench plus a chest and takes one footprint instead of two. Past a few hundred hand tools the separate chest wins, because drawer slides rated at 100 lb each and a real per-drawer figure only exist in dedicated tool storage. The crossover is covered in tool chest vs tool cabinet.

Do these benches come with the pegboard, or do I mount it to the wall?

All four steel benches here mount their pegboard to the bench frame, not to your wall. That is the single most useful feature in the category if you rent, if your garage has block or brick walls, or if the layout might change. The Gladiator foldaway has no pegboard at all.

How many drawers do I actually need on a bench?

Two is enough for the tools you reach for every session; six starts replacing a tool chest. The Rumetol is the only bench here with a mix of tall and short drawers, which matters because a bank of identical shallow drawers has nowhere for a cordless drill to live.

Can I lock everything on these benches?

No. On every bench here the lock covers the cabinet door only — the drawers are open. If you need locked drawers, that is a tool chest feature rather than a bench feature, and the options are in the best tool chests for a garage.
