The short answer
Husky's 52-inch mobile workbench is the one to buy: a 1-inch solid wood top with a polyurethane coating, a published 1,200 lb frame capacity, 100 lb slides with double-slide support on the heaviest drawers, 24.5 inches of depth, and a built-in power center with six outlets and two USB sockets. It is the most thoroughly specified product in this category and the most expensive.
The most thoroughly specified tool storage here, and the deepest. A published frame capacity, double-slide drawers and a real wood top — at the highest price.
Fifteen drawers and six feet of rubberwood in one unit. At this price the complete absence of load figures is the thing that keeps it out of first place.

The proposition, and when it holds
A tool chest with a solid wood top is two pieces of equipment in one footprint: storage below, work surface above. In a garage where the main bench is permanently covered in a half-finished project, the second surface is worth more than it sounds.
It holds when: you need a work surface and you need storage, and floor space is tight. It does not hold when you already have a good bench — in which case the wood is a premium you are paying for a surface you will stack things on.

Only one product publishes a top capacity: Husky's extra-deep 46-inch, at 200 lb. That is a useful number and also a modest one — the proper workbenches on this site publish surface ratings from 220 lb (WEN, honestly) to 2,500 lb (whole-frame static claims).
So treat these tops as assembly and layout surfaces rather than as benches you hammer on. For that, see the best garage workbenches.
Why Husky's 52-inch leads
It publishes three things nothing else in this category does.
A frame capacity: 1,200 lb. The only total frame figure in the whole tool-storage category, and it tells you something useful — nine drawers at 100 lb is 900 lb, so the frame has headroom over the drawers rather than the other way round.
Double-slide support on the top and bottom drawers. Not uniform slides throughout, but reinforcement specifically on the drawers that carry heavier items. That is a design decision rather than a spec sheet.
24.5 inches of depth, which Husky quantifies honestly as 36% more volume than a traditional 18-inch unit. Depth is the spec that decides whether a long extension bar fits at all.
On top of that: a 1 in. solid wood top with a polyurethane coating — so the wood is sealed against the oil and solvent a garage produces — and a built-in power center with 6 outlets and 2 USB sockets, which turns the chest into the charging station for a cordless fleet.
The depth argument, done properly
Husky's 46-inch extra-deep makes the case most explicitly: 24.5 in. deep, which is 36% more storage capacity than a traditional 18 in. deep unit. The maker does the arithmetic rather than leaving you to.
That is also what makes a wood-top chest work as a surface: an 18-inch-deep top is too shallow to lay anything out on, and 24.5 inches is genuinely usable. The two benefits arrive together.
The costs: more floor space, and reaching further into a deep drawer, which is harder on your back. If the chest goes against a wall anyway, the depth is free in floor-plan terms.
Maximum drawers plus a top
GarveeTech's 72-inch is the maximal version: 15 large drawers and six feet of solid rubberwood, in one unit that replaces a bench and a chest together.
Rubberwood is the right material — a genuine hardwood that takes clamps and sands flat, and the same species the better adjustable workbenches use. Drawer mats, keys and handles are all included.
What it does not publish, at this price, is anything: no per-drawer rating, no gauge, no weight. 'Each strong enough to hold substantial weight' is the kind of phrasing that replaces a number. Only two of four wheels lock, on a unit this large.
The budget route
Two chests here give you a solid wood top for a fraction of a Husky.
JOYBASE's cart publishes a 100 lb per-drawer slide rating — matching the premium brands — plus a fold-out side tray and perforated side panels for hanging tools. Four drawers, which makes it a work cart with storage rather than a chest.
biosplot's 46-inch publishes its dimensions (46 x 18 x 37 in.), gives you proper bench height, and has that one full-width drawer. One drawer total, so all your small-tool organization happens elsewhere.
Both are honest products at honest prices. Treat them as benches with storage rather than chests with a surface.
Do not mount a vise on one
Worth being explicit. A vise concentrates everything you do into a point load, and these tops are one inch of wood over drawer boxes rather than over a solid frame. Bolting a vise to one and then filing hard against it is how a top deforms and a drawer stops running.
For vise work you want a proper bench with a solid top and a frame built for a point load — see the best workbench vises for the mounting requirements. Use the chest top for assembly, layout and as somewhere to put the thing you are working on.

Where it wins
+The only product here that publishes a total FRAME capacity (1,200 lb) as well as a per-drawer rating
+24.5 in. deep — the deepest chest in this comparison, which is the spec that actually limits what fits
+Double-slide support on the heaviest drawers rather than uniform slides throughout
+A 1 in. solid wood top makes it a genuine second workbench, not a chest with a mat on it
Where it doesn’t
−The most expensive item in this category
−Two rigid and two swivel casters means it steers like a shopping cart — deliberate, but it does not pivot in place
−A 1,200 lb frame rating against 9 x 100 lb of drawers means the drawers are the real limit

Or just buy a rolling bench
The adjacent product worth comparing: a rolling workbench with drawers. Those publish 1,000 lb total capacity, sit at 37.5 in. so they park under a wall shelf, and give you six drawers plus a lockable cabinet — see the best rolling workbenches.
What they do not publish is a drawer-slide rating, which is exactly what the tool-storage category does. Which way you go depends on whether you trust a published total more than a published per-drawer figure.
Questions people actually ask
Is a wood-top tool chest worth it?+
If it replaces a bench, yes — a 1 in. solid wood top is a genuine second work surface you can clamp to, which turns one purchase into two pieces of equipment. If you already have a good bench, skip the wood and spend it on slides instead.
How much weight can a wood chest top hold?+
Husky publishes 200 lb for its extra-deep 46 in. bench top. Nobody else publishes a top capacity at all. For reference, that is well under what a proper workbench takes — see the best garage workbenches, where published figures run from 220 lb to 2,500 lb.
Rubberwood or solid hardwood?+
Most of these publish 'solid wood' without a species. GarveeTech publishes rubberwood specifically, which is a genuine hardwood that takes clamps and sands flat — the same material the good adjustable workbenches use. A pressed or engineered top cannot be resurfaced.
Can I mount a vise on a wood-top chest?+
Not safely on most of them. A vise concentrates everything into a point load on the top, and these tops are an inch thick over drawer boxes rather than over a solid frame. For vise work you want a proper bench; use the chest top for assembly and layout.
What makes Husky's chest different?+
Three published figures nothing else here gives: a 1,200 lb frame capacity, double-slide support on the top and bottom drawers, and 24.5 in. of depth quantified as 36% more volume. Plus a built-in power center with 6 outlets and 2 USB sockets.
