Tool Chest Buying Guide

Five decisions, in the order that matters. The first two are published specs; get those right and the rest is layout preference.

The short answer

  1. Check the per-drawer slide rating first. 100 lb full-extension ball-bearing is the benchmark. No published figure means you are buying on photographs.
  2. Then the steel gauge, and use empty weight as a cross-check. Lower gauge is thicker; 18-20 is the best here, 21 is good, 20-24 is budget.
  3. Then depth. 18 in. standard, 24.5 in. is 36% more volume, under 18 in. is a real limitation.
  4. Then the drawer mix, not the count. Deep drawers for cordless tools, shallow ones for hand tools.
  5. Then the casters. 5 x 2 in. crosses a threshold; 3 x 1 in. does not. Check how many brake.

1. The slide rating, first and foremost

The slides are the chest. Everything else is sheet metal around them.

100 lb per drawer on full-extension ball-bearing slides is the benchmark, and the products publishing it are CRAFTSMAN's S2000 line, CRAFTSMAN's 41-inch, WEN's GG532B and GG422B, Husky's 52-inch mobile workbench, and JOYBASE's budget wood-top cart.

Two qualifiers worth understanding:

  • Full extension means the drawer comes all the way out, so you can see and reach the back. Three-quarter extension permanently hides the rear third — on an 18-inch chest, six inches you cannot use.
  • Ball-bearing rather than friction slides is what makes a loaded drawer open smoothly rather than binding.

Where nothing is published — Sormols, Oakcloud, INTERGREAT, Maxority, GarveeTech, WORKPRO — the chest may be perfectly adequate. But a full socket set is comfortably over 30 lb, and you have no way to know whether that drawer is rated for it.

2. Steel gauge, with weight as a cross-check

Lower gauge numbers are thicker steel. The published figures here:

Why it matters: a loaded chest rolled over a garage threshold wants to rack — to deform into a parallelogram — and once it has, the drawers never run right again. Thicker steel in a braced frame resists it. CRAFTSMAN's published steel I-frame is addressing exactly this.

Where gauge is unpublished, empty weight relative to size is the proxy. CRAFTSMAN's S2000 is 199 lb at 52 in.; WEN's is 212 lb at 52 in.; WORKPRO's is 302 lb at 72 in. A 55-inch chest at 73 lb is a different product, whatever the photographs show.

3. Depth — the spec nobody checks

Almost everything is 18 inches. Two exceptions matter in opposite directions.

Husky's 24.5 inches, which the maker quantifies as 36% more storage capacity than a traditional 18-inch unit. If you have ever failed to fit a long extension bar, a breaker bar or a cordless saw with the battery on, that is the figure that fixes it.

Goplus's 11 inches, published plainly, and the useful warning in this category. At 11 inches a socket rail does not fit across the drawer and a long extension does not fit at all. Check the depth before the drawer count.

Depth costs floor space and makes you reach further in, which is harder on your back. If the chest is going against a wall anyway, depth is free in layout terms.

4. Drawer mix, not drawer count

More drawers in the same width means narrower drawers. Thirteen drawers in a 55-inch chest means thirteen small drawers, which holds nothing bulky.

What you ownWhat you wantExample
Hand tools and socketsMany shallow drawersCRAFTSMAN's ten drawers in 41-52 in.
Cordless power toolsFewer, deeper drawersWORKPRO's 5-drawer 52 in.
Long awkward thingsA full-width drawerbiosplot's 46 in. — the only one here
A genuine mixA published drawer mix by sizeSormols (7 large, 6 small), INTERGREAT (3 depths)
Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen.

Prefer a chest that publishes its mix by size over one that publishes only a count. A count tells you nothing about whether your tools fit.

5. Casters, and how many brake

Caster size decides whether the chest crosses a garage threshold or stops at it. The published figures:

  • 5 in. x 2 in. — Husky and CRAFTSMAN's carts. Crosses a threshold and a cable.
  • 3 in. x 1 in. — CRAFTSMAN's 26 in. combo. Fine on a smooth slab, poor over a lip.
  • Six casters, four braking — WORKPRO's 72 in. How 302 lb empty still rolls.
  • Four swivel, all four braking — WORKPRO's 52 in. and Maxority's 7-drawer. Better than the common two.
  • Two swivel brakes, two rigid — Husky's deliberate shopping-cart arrangement: tracks straight, will not pivot in place.

All four braking is genuinely better, because a loaded chest with two free casters creeps when you lean on it or pull a heavy drawer out.

The one decision that is not a spec

Whether you want the chest to replace a bench. If yes, buy a wood-top mobile workbench — a 1 in. solid wood top is a genuine work surface and it keeps the surface at bench height with the drawers below. Husky publishes a 200 lb top capacity on its extra-deep model; JOYBASE and biosplot do budget versions.

If no, skip the wood and spend the difference on slides and gauge. See the best tool chests with wood tops.

Chests that pass the five checks

Four chests, four price points, all with published specs

WEN's 42-inch is the cheapest chest on this site publishing a 100 lb per-drawer rating. CRAFTSMAN's S2000 publishes the thickest steel. Husky's publishes the most depth and a frame capacity. CRAFTSMAN's 26-inch combo publishes an honest 30 lb for a budget product.

Why these and not others: the selection criteria for this category.

Then load it properly

A good chest loaded badly is a bad chest. Heaviest items in the bottom drawers, frequently used tools on the wall rather than in a drawer at all, and the drawer mix matched to what you own.

How to organize a tool chest covers it, and tool chest vs tool cabinet covers whether to add a top box.

Questions people actually ask

What is the most important tool chest spec?

The per-drawer slide rating. 100 lb on full-extension ball-bearing slides is the benchmark, published by CRAFTSMAN, WEN, Husky and — surprisingly — JOYBASE. A drawer on unrated slides gets harder to open as you load it and eventually will not close.

How much should I spend on a tool chest?

Enough to get a published per-drawer rating, which is WEN's 42-inch GG422B at the low end. Below that you are buying on photographs. Above it you are paying for thicker steel, a named factory, more depth or a work surface — all real, all optional.

How many drawers do I need?

Fewer than you think, and sized for what you own. Ten drawers in 41 inches means each is narrow and will not take a long extension bar. If you own cordless power tools, five deep drawers beats thirteen shallow ones.

What depth should I look for?

18 in. is standard; 24.5 in. (Husky) is 36% more volume by the maker's own arithmetic. Watch for anything under 18 — Goplus publishes 11 in., at which point a socket rail does not fit across the drawer.

Do I need locking drawers?

If anyone else uses the garage, or if the chest rolls, yes. A locking bar or keyed lock stops drawers sliding open when you move it, which is a real hazard with a loaded chest. WEN publishes lockable on every drawer; Goplus publishes a locking bar.
