How Much Weight Can Pegboard Hold?
Almost nobody publishes a number, and the ones who do publish a comparison instead. Here is what actually carries the load and how to install for it.

The short answer
No pegboard maker in this category publishes a pound rating. Wall Control states its steel panels are more than ten times stronger than conventional hardboard pegboard — a relative claim rather than a figure — and Ultrawall and INCLY publish nothing. Real capacity is set by three things you can check: whether the panel is steel or hardboard, whether there is a standoff behind it so hooks seat properly, and whether it is fastened into studs or masonry rather than drywall.
Why there is no number
It is tempting to read the absence of a rating as makers hiding something. The more likely explanation is that a pegboard panel has no single meaningful load figure, because the load is distributed across however many hooks you put in it, at whatever heights, fastened into whatever your wall happens to be.
That is a genuine measurement problem, unlike shelving — where a per-shelf rating is a clean, testable claim and the good makers publish one. On this site we treat a relative claim as no rating at all, which is why this page leads with what you can actually verify rather than with a number somebody made up.
The three things that actually decide it
In order of how much difference each makes.
- The panel material. Hardboard fails by the hole deforming around the hook until the hook drops out. Steel holes keep their shape indefinitely. This is the whole reason every panel we recommend is metal.
- The standoff. A hook needs clearance behind the board to rotate into its seated position. Wall Control's pre-formed 3/4 in. flange provides it; a panel screwed flat to drywall does not, and hooks in a flat-mounted board sit at the wrong angle and tip their tools off.
- The fastening. Load on a pegboard wall is cumulative — twenty tools at 2 lb each is 40 lb pulling the panel off the wall, concentrated at the top fasteners. Studs or masonry, always.
| Panel | Material | Standoff | Hook fit | Published rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall Control black | Powder-coated steel | Pre-formed 3/4 in. flange | Slotted + 1/4 in. pegs | None — relative claim only |
| Wall Control galvanized | Galvanized steel | Pre-formed 3/4 in. flange | Slotted + 1/4 in. pegs | None — relative claim only |
| Ultrawall panels | Powder-coated steel | Not mentioned | 1/8 in. and 1/4 in. hooks | None |
| INCLY 48 x 36 kit | Black galvanized steel | Not mentioned | 1/4 in., double stabilizing pegs | None |
The hook is usually the weak link
Before worrying about the panel, look at the hook. In practice the hook is what fails first, and it fails in a specific and recognizable way: you lift a tool off, the hook swings out of the hole with it, and now the hook is on the floor and the tool is in your hand.
Two features fix that. Double stabilizing pegs — two points of engagement instead of one — mean the hook cannot rotate. INCLY's hardened-steel 1/4 in. hooks have them, and that is the single most useful thing about the kit. Slotted hooks, as used by Wall Control, lock into the panel in a way a plain bent peg cannot.
Hook compatibility is also worth checking before you buy a panel, because an existing hook collection is worth real money. Wall Control panels take both slotted Wall Control hooks and conventional 1/4 in. pegs. Ultrawall takes both 1/8 in. and 1/4 in. hooks, which is the widest compatibility here. Pegboard hooks and accessories covers which hooks fit what.
Installing for load
Five things, in the order you do them.
- Find and mark the studs before deciding where the panel goes, not after. The panel position follows the studs.
- Fasten at every stud crossing, top and bottom. A panel held at four corners sags in the middle and the middle is where the hooks are.
- Keep the standoff. If the panel has a flange, do not crush it by overtightening. If it has none, use furring strips behind it to create the clearance.
- Use the named fastener for your wall. Wall Control calls out blue Tapcon screws or equivalent for concrete. Masonry with the wrong fastener is worse than drywall with the right one.
- Put the heavy things low and spread them out. Weight at the top of a panel is the worst case for the fasteners, and a clustered load is worse than a distributed one.

When pegboard is the wrong product
If what you want to hang is genuinely heavy — a loaded bike, a car ramp, a cordless-tool rack with six batteries in it — pegboard is not the answer whatever the panel is made of. Slatwall distributes load into a continuous horizontal groove engaged along its length, which is a fundamentally stronger geometry than a hook in a hole.
The honest comparison is in slatwall versus pegboard. The short version: pegboard for hand tools, where fine-grained rearrangement is the value; slatwall for anything with real mass. And for a category where load ratings genuinely are published and genuinely do mean something, garage shelving load ratings is the contrast worth reading.
The panels worth buying
Four metal panels, ranked on the specs that are published
Wall Control's flange and hook compatibility make it the pick; the galvanized version is cheaper and better in a damp garage; Ultrawall takes both hook sizes; INCLY covers twelve square feet with 234 accessories and double-peg hooks.

Pegboard that lasts
Wall Control Metal Pegboard Pack, 2 x (32 x 16 in.) (30-P-3232B)
The pegboard worth buying. The pre-formed flange and steel holes are why your tools still hang straight in five years, and it takes generic pegs too.

Damp or unheated garages
Wall Control Galvanized Steel Pegboard Pack (30-P-3232GV)
The same Wall Control panel in galvanized steel for less money. Buy this one for a cold, damp garage and the black for a finished-looking wall.

Both hook sizes
Ultrawall Metal Pegboard Wall Panels
Cheaper steel pegboard that takes both hook sizes. The missing standoff flange is the real difference from Wall Control, and you will feel it when a heavy hook tips.

A whole wall in one box
INCLY 48 x 36 in. Metal Pegboard Kit with 234 Accessories
The most complete pegboard purchase here: twelve square feet, 234 accessories, and hooks with the double pegs that stop them swinging out.

Why these and not others: the selection criteria for this category.
For the ranked picks across the whole category with the full write-ups, see the best pegboard for a garage. In a tight bay where the wall is doing several jobs at once, the small garage plan covers where the board goes, and garage setup under $500 puts a pegboard wall in context against everything else that bay needs.
Questions people actually ask
How much weight can pegboard hold?
No maker in this category publishes a pound figure, which is the honest answer. Wall Control states its steel panels are more than ten times the strength of conventional hardboard pegboard — a relative claim, not a rating — and Ultrawall and INCLY publish no figure at all. What determines real capacity is the panel material, whether there is a standoff behind it, and what the panel is fastened into.
How much weight can a pegboard hook hold?
Also unpublished, and it depends on the hook as much as the board. What is visible is the design: INCLY's 1/4 in. hardened-steel hooks have double stabilizing pegs, which stop the hook swinging out as you lift a tool off. A single-peg hook in hardboard is the weakest link in any pegboard wall, regardless of what the panel could theoretically take.
Is metal pegboard stronger than hardboard?
Substantially, and for a specific reason: steel holes do not fray. Hardboard pegboard fails by the hole deforming around the hook until the hook falls out, which is how a cheap board becomes unusable within a year. A steel hole keeps its shape, which is why every panel on this page is metal.
Can pegboard be mounted directly to the wall?
It should not be, and this is the detail that matters most. A hook needs clearance behind the panel to seat properly — Wall Control's panels have a pre-formed 3/4 in. flange that holds the board off the wall for exactly this reason. Mounted flat to drywall, hooks sit at the wrong angle and tools tip out.
What should pegboard be screwed into?
Studs, or masonry with the right fastener. Wall Control names blue Tapcon screws or equivalent for concrete, which saves a second trip to the hardware store. Drywall anchors will hold a screwdriver rack and will not hold a loaded board, because the load is cumulative across the whole panel.
