CRAFTSMAN VERSASTACK XL Rolling Tower, 4 Piece (CMST60420)

Tool Storage

The Best Rolling Tool Boxes

For tools that leave the garage. Wheel size and whether you have to unstack to reach anything are the two things that actually matter.

The short answer

CRAFTSMAN's VERSASTACK XL is the pick if your tools leave the garage: 7-inch wheels that cross a gravel driveway, drop-and-lock stacking so three boxes move as one, and a published dust-and-water rating. If you want drawers rather than lift-off lids — so you reach a tool without unstacking the tower — Klein's MODbox three-drawer solves that properly.

This is a different product class

Worth saying first, because the two categories get compared and should not be. A rolling tool chest from the main roundup is garage furniture: 200 lb of steel, nine or ten drawers, a published 100 lb per drawer, and it is not going anywhere.

A rolling tool box is luggage. It is 5-50 lb, plastic or light steel, and its job is getting tools to a job site, a friend's driveway or the other side of the house. If your tools stay in the garage, buy a chest; this page is for everyone else.

Wheel size is the spec that separates them

Small wheels are why cheap rolling boxes are infuriating. They stick on gravel, they stop dead at a curb, and they make the box tip when it does.

Three products here publish 7 in. wheels: CRAFTSMAN's VERSASTACK XL, Keter's Stack N Roll and DEWALT's DWST17820. Seven inches is the size that rolls over a driveway lip, across gravel, and up a curb.

Klein's MODbox does not publish a wheel size, which on a 51 lb three-drawer box is the one gap in an otherwise strong spec sheet.

Drawers versus lids: the real design difference

This is the thing that determines whether you still like a stacking system in a year.

Lid-opening boxes stack neatly and you have to unstack them to reach anything in the bottom one. In practice that means the bottom box holds the things you need least, which defeats the point of having the capacity.

Klein's MODbox three-drawer solves it: three drawers on full-extension ball-bearing slides, with the large lower drawer sized for bulky power tools and two compact top drawers for accessories and batteries. You reach any tool without moving anything.

That is the best idea in this category, and it is why the MODbox is worth its trade price if the tools travel regularly.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen.

Two details worth calling out. CRAFTSMAN's drop-and-lock with one-touch release means you move three boxes as one load and separate them one-handed, which is the whole value of a stacking system. And Keter's audible snap latches tell you the box is actually closed before you tip it — a small thing that prevents a genuinely bad moment.

The locking-bar detail

Klein publishes something specific and well-designed: a nesting locking bar that secures the drawers during transport and stores in the base of the toolbox when not in use.

That is the correct answer to a real problem. A drawer box in a truck bed needs its drawers locked shut, and a separate locking bar is a thing you lose within a month. Giving it a home in the base is the kind of decision that comes from somebody actually using the product.

Weather resistance, for tools in a truck

CRAFTSMAN is the only one here publishing that the VERSASTACK XL is tested and rated for dust and water resistance. If the tools ride in an open truck bed or sit on a wet job site, that is the spec that matters most.

Keter's resin construction has a different advantage: it never rusts. In an unheated garage that condenses every spring, a resin box full of steel tools is better than a steel box full of steel tools — though both want the tools dry.

The ultralight option

DEWALT's DWST17820 weighs 4.88 lb empty and has 7 in. wheels, a metal-plastic telescopic handle and a bi-material top carry handle. It is a wheeled tote rather than a system, and at that weight it is genuinely useful as the one box that leaves the garage.

What it is not: organized. One box, no drawers, no trays. Everything goes in together and you dig. For a specific job that is fine; as a permanent tool home it is not.

The honest caveat on every rolling box: the telescopic handle is the part that breaks. DEWALT's is metal-plastic, Keter's is metal — and Keter's metal handle is a point in its favor at a lower price.

#4Best for one box, one hand

DEWALT DWST17820 Rolling Tool Box with Telescopic Handle

7.2/10our score, from published specs

Five pounds, seven-inch wheels and two handles. It is a wheeled tote, cheap and genuinely useful as the box that leaves the garage.

What the maker publishes

  • Modular rolling box with a metal-plastic telescopic handle
  • Push-button handle release
  • Bi-material top carry handle
  • 7 in. wheels; 4.88 lb

Where it wins

  • 7 in. wheels on a box this light means it rolls over anything
  • Both a telescopic handle and a top carry handle, so it tows or lifts
  • Part of the DEWALT TSTAK ecosystem, which is widely stocked

Where it doesn’t

  • One box, no drawers and no organizer: this is a tote with wheels
  • No published capacity
  • The handle is the part that breaks on every rolling toolbox, and this one is metal-plastic

And for the tools that stay

Most people need both: a chest in the garage for the bulk of the collection, and one rolling box for the subset that travels. The best tool chests for a garage covers the first, and how to organize a tool chest covers deciding which tools go in which.

In a genuinely tight garage, a rolling box plus wall storage can replace a chest entirely — see the small garage page.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best rolling tool box?

CRAFTSMAN's VERSASTACK XL if the tools travel — 7-inch wheels, drop-and-lock stacking, and a published dust-and-water rating. Klein's MODbox three-drawer if you want drawers rather than lids, so you reach a tool without unstacking the tower.

Why do wheel size and stacking matter so much?

Seven-inch wheels cross a gravel driveway and a curb; small wheels are why cheap towers tip and stick. And a stacking system with lids means unstacking to reach the bottom box, which is the single most annoying thing about them — drawers solve it.

Rolling box or a proper tool chest?

If the tools stay in the garage, a rolling chest from the main roundup is better in every way: more capacity, published drawer ratings, a work surface. Rolling boxes are for taking tools to the work.

Do I have to buy into one ecosystem?

Practically, yes, and that is the real cost. VERSASTACK, MODbox, TSTAK and Stack N Roll each only stack with themselves. Pick based on what you will plausibly add in three years, not on the first box.

Are plastic boxes strong enough?

For transport, yes, and resin has one real advantage in a garage: it never rusts. The failure points are the latches and hinges, which are not serviceable. Klein's MODbox uses trade-grade latches; Keter's audible snap latches at least tell you the box is actually closed.
